We got new keys!
Well, they aren't keys. And they aren't new.
Okay, lets start over.
Housing has installed new door locks. Right now it is just the doors entering the apartment and those for the bedrooms, and will soon expand to gates entering housing. Their new lock system is kind of like hotels (key cards), using our student ID cards. I guess its nice, I mean just slip it into your wallet, most students I'm sure carry their ID cards everywhere. If you live in housing, it also holds money for meals, so why not have it. It also is your ticket into using the gym.
The past couple years I'll admit I didn't always have my student ID with me. It wasn't required to have it everywhere, and if I wasn't going to the gym, getting food, checking something out of housing (such as a vacuum) or picking up my paycheck I didn't have it with me. There were even a couple times where I thought I had it but it was either to buried in my backpack or I had the card holder, but not the card.
That being said I'm sure its going to be a bit of a transition getting used to these new locks and doors. The bedroom doors now automatically lock when you close them, and while I'm sure thats a nice thing making sure no one can enter the room without the ID card, it has made me a little panicked. I mean I don't close my door often, and usually if I do I'm inside the room, so really no problem, but when I'm running to the laundry room or taking a shower I tend to close my door over some.
This is where I tend to worry. The first few days back I was the only one of my roommates there. I was extra paranoid, making sure I had my ID card on me everytime I left the apartment. I put one of my shoes at the corner of my bedroom door so that when I exited my room I didn't have to worry about being locked out. If on the other hand I happen to be wearing said shoe, I would hang my lanyard (holding my keys and student ID) on my door handle so that they would at least be there if I needed them. I mean housing gives students two free lockouts each year, and then you have to start paying, but if I was locked out of my bedroom, then there was a 50/50 chance I wasn't going to have my phone with me, which meant walking to housing, to a neighbor to borrow their phone to call housing, or go to my RA, all would have led me to being completely locked out of the apartment, which I really didn't want, hence my over paranoia.
I know it'll take some getting used to, and I'm sure I'm not the only one freaking out about being locked out, and in the long run it'll be easier for housing, but right now it is a little bit of a pain. There might be fewer lockouts in the long run, and when someone misplaces their "keys" now it shouldn't cost around $180 to re-key the entire dorm, maybe just $10 or so to go get a new student ID and get it reprogrammed. Okay, maybe housing made a wise decision. Good job, I'll stop freaking out now.
