I might have an addiction
It costs money like most do. It takes up my time, takes me away from where I am and to another place.
My addiction is reading, or books, or both if you can put the two together somehow. Obviously it is not a bad thing. At least not as bad as other addictions, I read, I collect books, and I keep reading.
I mentioned my goals for last year. How I read every book on that list, and added a couple more which were either on a bookshelf in my house or happen to find its way into my possession (gift or purchased). My goals for this year seemed somewhat the same although making the reading list a little longer. I had started the year thinking I could finish 3 books by the time spring semester started (that's this Tuesday) but as time was running down, and most of my break was spent working that small hope seemed to shatter. I had read one book on the list, and started another thinking it would barely get finished before school. Not to say I haven't finished it, because as of 20 minutes ago I had, but I had wanted to finish it before I moved back to school, which hadn't happened. So I packed it along in my things, believing I would barely have enough time to finish it.
Obviously I was wrong...
I came across a little dilemma mid day today. I knew that I would be done with the book, and have some time to spare, as none of my roommates have shown up yet, and it is a little gloomy and cold outside to really want to do anything. TV, movies, Netflix can only last so long, and when I'm watching an episode of Bones for the 12th time it really does tend to get old. I remembered one of my colleagues (is that the right word) mentioning in her blog a bookstore here in Turlock. I had never been there, never seen it, and until that moment hadn't thought about visiting it. A quick little Google search told me it was only a 5 minute drive away, and that they were open, grabbed my keys and my wallet and I was out the door. Lightly Used Books was a quaint little store, which once I walked in I was in awe. I mean its not like I haven't been in a bookstore before, but for some reason this one seemed different, the feeling, the colors the set up, who knows. There were just books everywhere, and I wasn't exactly sure where to start. I kind of just wandered for a while looking left and right, looking at different genres and looking for authors. If you hadn't noticed I'd say my favorite authors are Kathy Reich and John Grisham (both murder mystery/law and order type books).
The first one I found was Grisham, the books were there and I was just reading titles, trying to remember what I had, what I've read, and possibly what was at my house in another room or on another shelf. My one little problem was that most of them were hard cover, where as I myself prefer paper back. I picked up one, the only paperback I saw, it seemed small enough that I could finish in a few days and was content. But as I'm sure I've read more Grisham books then Reich books I was hoping there were a few that I could grab and take and keep for later. Now that I knew how this search thing worked I would find the author. I found here, and again stared, read titles, remembering what I had, what I've read, and again a little dissatisfied, all were hard covered.
I picked up one, titled Monday Mourning, I knew I hadn't read it and quite tempted to buy it. I looked put it down, and turned away, and that's when I saw them the bottom of shelves, turned on their side, paperbacks. I wasn't at a total loss, thank goodness! They were at the bottom of all the shelves, you just had to be short or know where to look, so I turned back around got on my knees and went looking through the R's. More gazing at books I didn't own, but surely wanted to read, I chose two and then went back to Grisham. I had given up on him because the only paperback I saw was what was in my hand, but now I knew. On my knees again this time the list was a little more slimming, had I read this book, do we have it somewhere in the house. There was one title I was 90% sure we didn't have The Last Juror, but should I buy it? I already had three books in my hand, and at the time didn't even know how much they cost. Lets try and pace myself, I mean I did have five more books waiting for me at home. Three was good, and if I wanted more, I know where to go, where to look. Three books at a total of $14.80, it was a good day, a good find, and I now had a few more books to hold me over for the semester.
Maybe its a little to early to call it an addiction (I mean I read 7 books last year), only 7 but considering my past and how many I've read recently it seems like this little thing is growing, and not going away. I've got more books in my collection, and I'm sure it'll keep growing as long as these authors keep writing.
