Grand Experimental Challenge Pt. 2

The deadline for part two of the Grand Experimental Challenge was Friday February 22nd!  Maybe it was that everyone's question/first part was so good that he professors couldn't choose (which I kind of doubt) but the second round instead of being narrowed down was given to all students, which means that everyone had to come up with their own experiment. This as I may have stated, required: what materials were needed (substances, flasks, pipettes etc.) measurements of such substances and maybe an estimate of how long the experiment might take.

Looking back now and thinking over what I handed in as a submission, it could have been better. A little more technical and a little more through, when I was working in it last week my mind set was more in the "let's just try and finish it" kind of thing. I don't think I was putting as much effort in it as I should have seeing how over the weekend a light bulb hit me and made me realize this little mistake.  I realized I missed a few things, and wasn't as precise as I could have been.

Instead of sharing the entire assignment I turned in, I think I'll just share a little outline of sorts.

Materials Required:
  • 3-4 150ml flasks
  • pipette
  • burette
  • liquid ninhydrin (about 50ml)
  • an empty spray bottle
  • 3-4 different types of oils (about 5ml each)
  • gloves
  • blank sheets of paper
My procedure included timing what how long it takes for a set of fingerprints to show up on a piece of paper based on different conditions for instance how sweaty or oily your hand may be. It also included trying to figure out if how much of ninhydrin was required to make a different type of oil to change its coloring.  From there you would compare if they changed to different colors (and why this happened) and based on the oils how much of the ninhydrin it required to change each of them.

I don't know if my experiment will be chosen based on what I've just told you, but hey at least I realized my mistake now before it got handed back to me.
