The Mess of Fingerprinting

I mentioned we did fingerprinting in my forensic science class, well here is the proof.

We were put into groups of about three, for the fact that we each needed to be fingerprinted twice and each needed to fingerprint two different people. There is a madness in what we did that day.

I think fingerprinting has changed some, or at least for certain things they did. When my mom was fingerprinted 10+ years ago, she was done like this with a card to fill out the form, and rolled her fingers in ink (maybe it was something else I don't know). Then a year or so ago when Tanya was getting fingerprinted I went with her, but she was done electronically. They rolled her prints on a little electric thing and that was transferred to the computer. In class we rolled the each others fingerprints with printing ink. We were told there is an order on how you do prints, you need to do right hand first (on top) and then the left hand each finger done individually, then the four fingers together and the thumbs separately. He had also advised that less ink is more in this case, because if there is to much ink it's hard to see the prints.

I said we only had to be fingerprinted twice, once by each person, well that was only if the prints were easy to see, because once we fingerprinted each other we had to name what type of print it was and classify the prints with a number. I was fingerprinted four times, and let me tell you using printer ink is messy, and my teacher did warn us, but it was really messy. The first time, there was to much ink on my fingers, the second time there wasn't enough (our thinking that because there was a lot left I didn't need to re-ink my hands). Since both times they weren't usable, we weren't going to turn them in, so I took this one:

This one was where by the end, you can see my fingers were running out of usable ink. After being fingerprinted a third time I was just hoping that my professor wasn't going to tell me that it needed to be done a fifth, luckily that didn't happen. Being inked and re inked to get enough for being fingerprints is a pain and a mess. I think it took a few hand washings, and a good scrubbing with the nail brush to get all of the ink off my hands. They just stuck, and got into the creases of my nails. He had advised us to wear dark clothes because it was messy, and the ink sticks and stays. I think we all tried to be careful about not getting any ink on our clothes, or anywhere else besides the paper. I think the hardest part was trying to write (once we realized trying to figure out who did what prints) with all the ink on out hands. It was fun, but it was also very messy.
